Splits ("we," "us," or "our") operates the Splits mobile application and the website at trysplits.com. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
1. Information We Collect
Account information
When you create a Splits account, we collect your name and email address. Authentication is handled through AWS Cognito, a secure third-party identity service provided by Amazon Web Services.
Receipt images
When you use Splits to scan a receipt, the photo is uploaded to our secure servers. We use AI (powered by Anthropic's Claude) to extract item names, prices, quantities, tax, and tip from the image. Receipt images are stored in Amazon S3 and are associated with your account.
Usage data
We collect information about how you interact with the app, including splits created, items claimed, and session activity. This helps us improve the product and troubleshoot issues.
Participant information
When participants (non-registered users) access a split via a shared link, we collect only the name they enter. Participants are not required to create an account or provide an email address.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve the Splits service
- Process receipt images and calculate fair bill splits
- Send you verification emails and important account notifications
- Respond to your requests and provide customer support
- Detect and prevent fraud or abuse
3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only in the following circumstances:
- With other split participants: When you create or join a split, your name and claimed items are visible to others in that split.
- Service providers: We use third-party services to operate Splits, including Amazon Web Services (hosting, storage, and authentication), Anthropic (AI receipt processing), and Railway (backend infrastructure). These providers access data only as needed to perform services on our behalf.
- Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, or legal process.
4. Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored on servers located in the United States. We use industry-standard security measures, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), secure authentication through AWS Cognito, and access-controlled cloud storage for receipt images.
5. Data Retention
We retain your account information and split history for as long as your account is active. Receipt images are retained for a reasonable period to support dispute resolution and app functionality. You can request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by contacting us.
6. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate information
- Request deletion of your account and personal data
- Withdraw consent for data processing where applicable

7. Children's Privacy
Splits is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the app or by email. Your continued use of Splits after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
